Financial statements are not a single day but a chain of deadlines. Knowing them in advance spreads the work out and keeps spring calm.

Four months — and what follows

Financial statements: must be prepared within four months of the end of the financial year.
Tax return: a limited company files within four months of the end of the month in which the financial year ended; sole traders and partnerships follow the spring personal tax schedule.
Annual general meeting: a limited company holds its AGM within six months of the year end; the meeting adopts the statements and decides on distributions.
Trade Register: a limited company's financial statements are filed for registration — in practice within eight months of the year end.

What the statements contain

Income statement and balance sheet in the statutory KPA format
Notes — condensed for a small company, but not optional
Balance sheet specifications substantiating every balance
Fixed assets and depreciation under the Business Income Tax Act
A cash flow statement and board report where required

Checklist: what your accountant needs

Final bank statements through to the end of the financial year
Open sales and purchase invoices at the balance sheet date
Inventory value, if you hold stock
Work in progress and new fixed assets with receipts
Loan balance certificates and interest
Accruals: insurance, rent, annual fees
Details of owner loans or private withdrawals
